For a Part 107 flight in the United States, your drone must meet the federal Remote ID operating requirements, even if it weighs less than 250 grams. The usual choices are a functioning Standard Remote ID aircraft, an eligible broadcast module on an aircraft without Standard Remote ID, or a qualifying flight inside an FAA-recognized identification area (FRIA). Specific FAA authorization can permit deviations. FAA registration guidance and 14 CFR Part 89 establish that starting point.
Before your next job, match the equipment you will fly to its FAA registration record, check that the applicable Remote ID system works, and confirm that your chosen compliance route permits the planned operation. A Remote Pilot Certificate alone does not satisfy these aircraft and flight requirements.

When the rule applies
Remote ID connects an aircraft's identity with broadcast location information. Its operating rule is in 14 CFR Part 89; Part 107 remains the framework for your small-drone operation. Part 89 applies to aircraft registered or required to be registered under Parts 47 or 48, and to foreign-registered civil unmanned aircraft operating in U.S. airspace. It excludes U.S. armed forces aircraft. An ordinary commercial operator should not infer an exemption from the client's identity or the job's public-service purpose. See Part 89, sections 89.101 and 89.105.
The lightweight registration exception belongs to qualifying recreational operations. It does not exempt a sub-250-gram Part 107 flight. The FAA requires individual Part 107 aircraft registration; a recreational registration cannot be used for a Part 107 operation. FAA registration guidance explains both distinctions.
This is an existing requirement. The rule's compliance date was September 16, 2023; the FAA's temporary enforcement-discretion policy ended March 16, 2024. Old articles describing an approaching deadline or equipment-related grace period do not describe today's position. See the FAA's enforcement announcement.
Choose the correct compliance route
Use the aircraft's actual configuration to choose a route. The following comparison summarizes section 89.110, section 89.115, and the FAA's FRIA guidance, checked September 7, 2026. The job-fit column is an editorial interpretation of those limits.

For Standard Remote ID, the normal equipment check is an FAA-accepted declaration of compliance covering the aircraft's serial number. Section 89.110 also recognizes qualifying Part 21 design or production approvals. A sales description saying “Remote ID ready” is insufficient to establish that your particular aircraft and configuration meet the rule.
Two practical mistakes deserve attention. First, the module route's visibility requirement attaches to the person manipulating the controls. A visual observer does not remove that requirement, which matters when planning first-person-view work. Second, the FAA says aircraft equipped with Standard Remote ID or a broadcast module must still broadcast when flown inside a FRIA. Do not switch off an equipped aircraft's system simply because you are at an approved site. Section 89.115, FAA FRIA guidance.
What the aircraft broadcasts
Both equipment routes send identification and location data directly from the aircraft by radio. The FAA describes broadcasts using technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Remote ID is therefore distinct from uploading a flight log after landing. See the FAA Remote ID toolkit.
A Standard Remote ID aircraft broadcasts its identity, aircraft position and altitude, velocity, control-station position and altitude, a time mark, and emergency status. A broadcast module sends its own serial number, aircraft position and altitude, velocity, takeoff position and altitude, and a time mark. The practical distinction is control-station location versus takeoff location: the module's takeoff point does not become a moving indication of where the pilot subsequently walks. Part 89, sections 89.305 and 89.315 specify the message contents.
Remote ID does not itself authorize controlled-airspace access, flight over people, or beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations. Continue assessing those permissions separately under Part 107, including section 107.41 for airspace, section 107.31 for visual line of sight, and the applicable operations-over-people provisions. A compliant broadcast answers an identification requirement; it does not settle whether the mission is otherwise permitted.
Check equipment and update FAA registration
Start with the FAA's Remote ID instructions, which link to its Declaration of Compliance system and FAADroneZone. Confirm the accepted equipment record, then locate the Remote ID serial number using the manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume that every number on the controller, battery, or aircraft is the required identifier. Operators do not submit a manufacturer's declaration for an unlisted product.
For an existing Part 107 registration, the FAA currently directs you to the Part 107 dashboard, then Manage Device Inventory. Open the aircraft's Actions menu, choose Edit, set the Remote ID answer to Yes, enter the applicable aircraft or module Remote ID serial number, and save.
For a new device, use Add Device in the Part 107 inventory. Select the applicable Remote ID device type. For the module route, enter the drone's make and model with the module's Remote ID serial number, then complete registration. These are the FAA's current screen labels; revisit the instructions if the interface changes.
Moving a module between aircraft
Do not apply the recreational fleet-registration shortcut to Part 107. The FAA's Advisory Circular 107-2A, paragraph 5.17.1 explains that a module may move between Part 107 aircraft, but its serial number must also move from the first aircraft's registration certificate to the second aircraft's certificate before operation. It may be listed on only one aircraft registration certificate at a time.
For example, if an operator transfers a module from aircraft A to aircraft B for a survey, physically attaching it to B is only part of the change. The registration record must reflect the transfer before B flies, and A needs a valid compliance route for any subsequent flight. Include the registration update in the aircraft-change procedure, not just the module's mounting and power checks.
Module attachment, power, required firmware, and startup indications depend on the equipment. Follow its instructions and verify operation in the configuration actually being flown. Section 89.115 expressly requires checking module functionality before takeoff.
Understand exceptions and FAA authorizations
A FRIA is an FAA-approved geographic area, not a designation a pilot or landowner can create for a day's work. Use the approved-location map linked from the FAA FRIA page, check its boundaries, and confirm site access with the operator. Only FAA-recognized community-based organizations and eligible educational institutions may apply to establish one. Airspace restrictions still apply inside it.
For an operation that needs a different arrangement, the FAA describes a Remote ID
Letter of Authorization process. Aeronautical research and demonstrations of
regulatory compliance are recognized purposes; certain other operations, such as drone
light shows under an FAA waiver, may also qualify. The current request address is
RIDAuthorizations@faa.gov. Eligibility to request a letter is not permission to fly:
obtain the FAA authorization and follow its terms before relying on a deviation. See

Research is not a self-declared blanket exemption. Section 89.120 says the FAA may authorize the specified research or compliance operations. Likewise, do not assume a separate operational waiver waives Part 89.
Keep the right documents and respond to failures
For an ordinary U.S.-registered Part 107 aircraft, keep these distinctions clear:
- Aircraft registration: Carry the registration certificate, on paper or digitally, and ensure its serial-number information matches the chosen Remote ID route. The aircraft must also display its FAA registration number. These are separate from the radio broadcast. See FAA registration guidance.
- Pilot documents: Have your Remote Pilot Certificate and qualifying identification physically possessed and readily accessible while exercising certificate privileges. Remote ID does not replace these requirements. 14 CFR 107.7 specifies inspection and document-access requirements.
- Any special authorization: Keep the applicable FAA letter available and incorporate its conditions into the flight plan. Follow any document-carrying requirements in the letter itself.
- Useful operating records: Retain the equipment's accepted declaration reference, installation instructions, serial-number transfer history, and any fault resolution. These are recommended records for repeatable fleet management, not a claim that Part 89 requires a separate Remote ID flight log for every routine sortie.
Foreign-registered civil aircraft have an additional process: under section 89.130, submit the required identification notice, obtain an FAA Confirmation of Identification before operation, keep it at the control station, and maintain accurate information. That confirmation is not U.S. aircraft registration.
A failure changes the flight decision
With Standard Remote ID, the system must remain functional and enabled from takeoff through shutdown. If the required broadcast stops in flight, the person at the controls must land as soon as practicable. The module route has the same landing requirement following broadcast loss. A working camera feed or flight-control link does not cancel it. Section 89.110, section 89.115.
Resolve a preflight Remote ID fault before launching under either broadcast route. Brief the crew on the system's failure indication and a suitable landing response before takeoff. For repeated jobs, put the equipment-to-registration match and Remote ID status check into the normal preflight checklist so that a module swap or aircraft replacement cannot pass unnoticed.
